Blasts from the Past!

Aloha!

Since it’s been a while since we posted anything on our Hawaii Leadership Academy Blog, we thought it would be fun to dig around in the archives and post some photos from camps throughout the years.

In 2010, Winners’ Camp Foundation will celebrate 25 years of producing leaders in our Island Communities! WOW!

We’re already looking forward to our Spring Break Hawaii Leadership Academy, to be held March 14-20, 2010. Sign up on our main website: http://www.winnerscamp.com.

Jammin’ July 2009: Day 7

Parent Day…WOW!!!

It was an amazing day! The campers ate lunch at the top of the ridge (the most incredible view on Oahu!) and the parents got to talk with the Winners’ Camp staff about everything their teens experienced during the week. The day flew by and before we knew it, it was time to say goodbye. Lots of hugs and aloha, and we’re hoping to see everyone back at the next camp!

Jammin’ July 2009: Day 5

Day 5 at camp: Wow!

You’ll see by the hazy photos that the camp was in the clouds today: it was a misty day on Kamehame Ridge. The entire camp even took a short afternoon nap, in between ropes course activities! Tonight, the campers will be staying up late to learn some crucial concepts pertaining to close family relationships.

Tomorrow is a big day at the camp: activities include the Trust Fall and the Breakthrough Events.

Saturday is PARENT DAY! One more reminder for parents flying in from the neighbor islands: if you have not already contacted us regarding your arrival times, please do so ASAP so we can reserve a seat for you on the VIP shuttle bus. (Email: winnerscamp@gmail.com or call Megan @ 808-295-3211) If you have already sent us an email, consider yourself confirmed and look for the VIP bus at the Hawaiian baggage claim loading area. The bus will be heading up to the camp at 9:00 a.m.

Jammin’ July 2009: Day 4

We can’t believe it’s Day 4 already!

The campers started the day with breakfast, followed by yoga and tae kwon do.

The teams continued on the low ropes courses and began the high ropes courses in the afternoon.

Hawaiian food for dinner tonight: kalua pork and cabbage, rice, lomi salmon, and poi!

Jammin’ July 2009: Day 3

Day 3 of Jammin’ July 2009! There were so many highlights from today: campers learned the Haka (we’re working on getting some video online!), had an etiquette class with Pam Chambers (a professional public speaking coach) and spent the afternoon with their teams on the low ropes courses.

Each team creates their own cheer to be used throughout the week at camp during teambuilding exercises and ropes courses. Here is a video of all 6 teams sharing their team cheers (plus the staff share their team cheer as well):

Jammin’ July 2009: Day 2

Aloha!

Today was the first full day of camp and we have a lot of photos to share from today! We wish we could narrate the slide show for all of you, because there are some good stories. If you have a teen currently at camp, you can ask them all about it on Parent Day or after camp!

We had a very special event today, and it was a first for Winners’ Camp. One of our Jewish campers turned 13, and the entire camp was privileged to observe his bar mitzvah ceremony. The rabbis brought kosher cake for everyone!  Hawai’i Leadership Academy is a non-denominational camp, and campers are taught the importance of  respect for ALL cultural and spiritual traditions.

The teams have begun their SATT (Student Adventures in Test Taking), and teambuilding continued through the morning and afternoon.  Everyone is settling in and the ropes courses begin tomorrow!  We hope you are enjoying the photos.

Jammin’ July 2009: Day 1

Aloha! Camp has begun! We have 60 campers from Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Big Island and the Mainland. All of the neighbor island teens arrived safely and on time to the airport. All of the campers spent the afternoon introducing themselves to their new teams and getting to know one another. There are 10 campers per team, and each team has two team leaders. The staff were all introduced as well, and everyone ate a wonderful homecooked meal of pasta & meatballs, ceasar salad and garlic bread. (The vegetarians were well fed, too!)

We’ll be posting photos every day during camp (although sometimes photos don’t get uploaded until late at night!) so everyone can check in as the week progresses. We love to get comments on our blog, so feel free to say ‘hi!’.

We’re off to a great start and it’s going to be a fantastic week. A hui hou!
